Ski and winter sports

Many standard policies do not cover skiing automatically. Here is what you typically need to watch for.

Winter sports are often excluded or require an add-on. That applies to alpine skiing, snowboarding, and off-piste — and terms vary a lot between insurers.

Typical cover with a ski add-on

  • Acute injury on-piste (treatment, repatriation)
  • Rescue / helicopter to a limited extent
  • Damaged or stolen ski equipment (with benefit caps)
  • Cancellation due to illness before departure (if included)

Typical exclusions

  • Competition, club training, or professional sport
  • Off-piste without a guide (or excluded entirely)
  • Alcohol impairment and gross negligence
  • Equipment rental without receipt / documentation

Practical tips before a ski trip

  • Read “hazardous sport” and “winter sports” in the terms — not only the marketing page
  • Keep ski passes, rental receipts, and piste patrol incident reports
  • Check whether a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is enough — it rarely is on its own
  • Consider liability cover if you could injure others on the slopes
